Fort Collins under flood advisory following thunderstorm, heavy rain

Southeastern Larimer County was under a flood advisory Tuesday following an afternoon thunderstorm that brought heavy rain to parts of Fort Collins.

An estimated 1.5 inches of rain fell in the area, according to the National Weather Service. A flood advisory was put in place until 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, with overflowing drainage and urban and small stream flooding possible in Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Timnath, Bellvue and Laporte.

Fort Collins was one of several communities also placed under a flood watch Tuesday. The watch is in effect through the evening, according to the NWS.

A flood watch is issued, “when conditions are favorable for flooding,” but does not mean flooding will occur, per the NWS. A flood advisory is issued when flooding may cause a “significant inconvenience,” but is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning.

Drivers who encounter flooded roads are asked to turn around, according to Tuesday’s flood advisory.
