Do classrooms and phones mix? Gov. Newsom says no, Bakersfield students say otherwise

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — To restrict cell phones in school or not, that is the question. Many city school districts have policies in place restricting electronics already, but students are not as enthused about the policies.

“I don’t like that, I don’t like that, that’s not for me,” said high school student Tarek Tarabui.

School is back in session and so are the classroom rules, with the Governor calling on schools this year to restrict cell phones in the classroom.

17 News reached out to each school district in Bakersfield, and several responded with policies that have been in place for years.

Some districts share similar takes on no cell phone usage during school hours, and other districts give employees right to confiscate devices and even read messages. But not all students see the benefits.

“No, I don’t like it, something could happen, and I wouldn’t even know until the end of the class period or the end of the day,” said newly graduated student Oved Benitez.
