I write extensively about the Dollar General discount chain, most frequently of late regarding the company’s ongoing national expansion. This piece, however, regards an upcoming spate of five Louisiana store closures in New Orleans East.

The state and territory with the most number of Dollar General locations in the US is Texas, with 1,860 stores, which is about 9% of all Dollar General stores in the US.

According to an August 13th report from The-Sun.com, no official company reason has yet been announced regarding the closures though one “expert” has offered an opinion.

As excerpted from the report: While underperforming stores are usually the reason chains culling its locations, one expert believes this is a different situation.“The problem with the dollar stores has been the oversaturation, the proliferation, but they do serve a purpose,” said Tangee Wall, who heads the nonprofit neighborhood group New Orleans East Matters.
