Homicide suspect sought in deadly Birmingham shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Officers are searching for a homicide suspect following a deadly shooting in north Birmingham Tuesday evening.

Initially, officers responded to the North Birmingham Homes Housing community, a.k.a. Vice Hills, on reports of a stolen vehicle. Officers spotted the stolen car in the 3100 block of 43rd Ave. N when they heard shots fired from a nearby apartment.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, an officer saw an armed suspect exit the apartment and confronted him. The officer opened fire on the suspect during the confrontation, but the suspect was able to get in the passenger side of the stolen vehicle and escape. The vehicle was later abandoned on the 4100 block of Fairmont Place.

Additional officers responded to the apartment where officers first heard shots fired and discovered 61-year-old Charlie Moore dead from a gunshot wound.

Police confirm no suspects are currently in custody and they do not know if the man a BPD officer fired at was struck.
