Dove, quail hunting now legal in Mobile – how to qualify

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — In a 6-1 vote, the Mobile City Council passed an amendment to allow dove and quail hunting within city limits under certain criteria.

These three types of birds can now be hunted in Mobile: Bob White Quail, Mourning White-Winged Dove and Ring-Necked Dove.

Under the new amendment, property owners can apply for permits to allow dove hunting on their property. The city will survey properties to ensure they meet certain parameters before awarding a permit:

  • The property must be at least 10 continuous acres.
  • The hunter cannot be within 700 feet of a school, school grounds, daycare facility, hospital, residential structures, playgrounds, parks, public roads or highways.
  • Ammunition is limited to a 7.5 shot.

“So, this isn’t just walk out your door and shoot something,” District 6 Councilman Josh Woods said.

Woods sponsored the amendment, which will take effect immediately.
