Man pleads guilty in east Wichita funeral shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A man has pled guilty in connection to a shooting that occurred at a funeral in 2023.

Demetrius Carter, 19, pled guilty on Friday to two counts of aggravated endangering of a child.

His initial charges also included two counts of aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon, and one count of criminal damage to property.

Wichita crime update as WPD seeks federal grant

According to the Wichita Police Department, Carter attempted to attend a funeral at a church in the 1100 block of N. Oliver on June 16, 2023 but was turned away by family members. Witnesses told police he then produced a handgun and shot at a crowd of people in front of the church.

Shots were returned, and Carter received a gunshot wound to his right forearm. He was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the WPD.

Several vehicles and homes in the area were hit with gunfire, and officers recovered a couple of firearms.

Carter’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 26.
