Your Stories Q&A: A Chick-fil-A at Sweetheart Corner is no longer being considered

CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!

A big update to a popular question and a story we’ve been following for years.

The proposal to bring a Chick-fil-A to the iconic Sweetheart Corner intersection in North Syracuse and Clay, is no longer being considered, according to Clay’s Planning Commissioner, Mark Territo.

Territo said the developer sent a withdraw notice to the Town of Clay at the end of June. Territo said the notice means the proposal is no longer being considered for the time being. A reason for the withdrawal was not given to the town.

While such a move is not unheard of, Territo said it was an unusual move for a project that had gone that far through the planning process.

The proposal called for a drive-thru and carry-out-only Chick-fil-A at the intersection of Taft Road and Route 11 in the Village of North Syracuse and Town of Clay.

The plan called for the current Basil Leaf Ristorante to be demolished so the Chick-fil-A could be built.

Basil Leaf owner Rudy DiRubbo previously told the YS Team, if the Chick-fil-A plan got the green light, he’d look to relocate Basil Leaf and offer catering and to-go meals rather than a sit-down restaurant.
