Short film on Birmingham’s Dynamite Hill to premiere at Sidewalk Film Festival

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — “I’m Still Here,” a short film documentary produced in Birmingham will premiere at the Sidewalk Film Festival on Monday.

The film focuses on three individuals who grew up on Center Street in the Smithfield neighborhood during the Civil Rights Movement. The street was nicknamed “Dynamite Hill” due to the frequent bombings targeting African-American families who moved into the area despite threats from segregationists.

The neighborhood became a symbol of both violence and resistance as Black professionals faced constant threats in their fight against segregation.

“I had lived in Birmingham for 40 years, completely unaware of what happened on Center Street. Our time with Barbara, Jefferson and Judge Brown was both enlightening and uplifting. What happened here was horrible, but as long as we embrace our history by sharing it with others then Birmingham can be a symbol of hope,” film producer Sam Miller said.
