Modesto police holding DUI checkpoint on Friday

(FOX40.COM) — The Modesto Police Department said it will be holding a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city on Friday.

The checkpoint will be held on Friday, Aug. 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Robert Hall said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Why does California law enforcement announce DUI checkpoints?

If a driver is found to be operating their vehicle under the influence, police said they could be charged with a fine, have their license suspended, or face other penalties.

The average fine for a first-time DUI offender is $13,500, police said.

“Modesto Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol,” the agency said. “Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving…While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”
