Man charged in deadly July 4 crash ordered held without bail

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of driving 90 mph and under the influence in a deadly crash on the Fourth of July was ordered held without bail and immediately taken into custody Wednesday morning.

William Largent, 33, had been out on bail after his initial arrest on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

After reviewing the case, prosecutors late last month filed charges of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.

Prosecutor Kacie Barrier said in court Wednesday that Largent has a prior DUI conviction, was warned of the dangers of drinking and driving and told he could be charged with murder if someone died as a result. She asked for no bail.

Defense attorney Gabrielle LaCarre, of Middlebrook & Associates, argued Largent is neither a risk to the community nor a flight risk. She said he’s worked 10 years at the same company, his family lives here and he was only able to obtain bail after his younger brother cosigned on the bond.
