First-year students at VCU expected to arrive this week

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — First-year students at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are expected to arrive this week to move on campus.

VCU’s Class of 2028 will mark the student of a new academic journey and move into the campus residence halls this week, Friday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 17.

According to the university, the fall enrollment for this year is 1% higher than fall 2023, estimating the total of new incoming freshman to be over 4,300 students. This would result to being one of the top four largest freshman classes in VCU’s history.

VCU confirmed over one-third of the incoming freshman class are expected to be Pell grant eligible, as well as more than one-third are expected to be first-generation college students.

From the university’s overall total of new students, approximately 84% are from Virginia, which includes 88% of the incoming freshman.

With move-in days approaching, VCU warns residents to expect heavy traffic and limited parking in the area of the university’s residence halls. Additionally, Laurel Street between Broad Street and Main Street will be closed.
