How to hear what Stockton’s Office of Violence Prevention is doing to reduce gun violence

Those wondering what Stockton is doing to reduce violence can listen to Office of Violence Prevention officials discuss their results at LifeSong Church this month, a city news release said.

“This event offers a unique opportunity to see beyond the numbers, hear personal stories, and understand the true impact of our programs,” Office of Violence Prevention Director Lora Larson said in a statement.

Started in 2013, Stockton’s Office of Violence Prevention uses social services and de-escalation to deter people from violence, according to a 2023 presentation by Larson.

The office’s method is to reach out to the top 100 or so people they believe are driving gun violence in Stockton and offer them a way out with housing, employment and food support.

“Our motto with our clients is, whatever it takes,” Larson said.

Office of Violence Prevention staff also work with victims and families after every shooting in the city, and try to deter retaliation, she said. In 2022-2023, the office served 73 people, including 24 kids between 12 and 17, Larson said.
