Woman sentenced for homicide behind Wichita business

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A woman arrested after a man was found stabbed to death behind a Wichita business has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

A passerby found the body of 49-year-old Hung Nguyen of Wichita behind a business in the 7800 block of East Harry on Aug. 17, 2021. The passerby, who thought Nguyen had been shot, called 911.

As Wichita Police Department detectives investigated the death, they learned the victim had been seen with a woman earlier in the day. They say the woman was identified as Latoya McCurn, 34. They contacted her and took her into custody.

Police believe Nguyen and McCurn were strangers and that McCurn stabbed Nguyen after he upset her.

McCurn was initially charged with first-degree murder. In June, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and criminal threat.

On Friday, District Judge Eric Williams sentenced her to 84-months in prison.
