I graduated from Virginia State College (VSC) in 1968. The school’s name was changed to Virginia State University (VSU) in 1979. Even today, I sometimes inadvertently say Virginia State College instead of Virginia State University, where my younger sister graduated from many years later. Even though we graduated from the same school, our certificates show different names.
Name change
Virginia State University has changed its name and programs many times over the years, reflecting the school’s history and the needs of the time.
Not only did the name change from Virginia State College to Virginia State University but there have been other major changes in the Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
Presidents
The last year I was at Virginia State College was also the last year for President Robert Prentiss Daniel, who served from 1950 to 1968. Since then, there have been 13 other presidents. Makola Abdullah is the current president, having held that position since 2016.
