Powell: Re-homing a piece of history

Toni Campbell has fond memories of rides in an antique buggy during her childhood.

After years of storing the buggy, Toni is like most grandmothers who are down-sizing. She is looking for the right person or organization to gift the buggy. She’s looking for someone who will cherish it and take care of it as she and her father did before her.

The buggy is a handsome vehicle with large, yellow wheels and a leather bench seat. Its history is vague. In one reference, it could have been a doctor’s buggy.

Toni’s father, the late George Campbell of Jasper, Mich., bought the buggy that was said to belong to a Clare County, Mich. sheriff. When he moved to Lenawee County, the buggy was also moved. One reason is it well preserved is because George stored it on a concrete floor in a secure weather resistant barn.

After Toni was given the buggy, she kept it well protected in the barn on the homestead. The buggy needs a new home because Toni sold the farm, including the barn.

She remembers fondly when her dad would take the buggy out of the barn every 4th of July and she and her cousins rode in it. Her dad pulled the buggy because there was no horse.
