Tropical Storm Ernesto brings dangerous conditions to East Coast

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tropical Storm Ernesto, which was downgraded from its hurricane status on Saturday evening, continues to bring dangerous beach conditions to the East Coast of the United States.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to remain “well offshore” but still affect the northeast through the next few days.

In a 5 a.m. update, Ernesto sat roughly 700 miles south of Nova Scotia and about 980 miles southwest of Cape Race Newfoundland. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Bermuda has since discontinued its Tropical Storm Warnings after it passed through as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday.

“Ernesto will weaken to a tropical storm and become extra tropical early next week as it moves close to St. Johns,” said Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Eric Stone.

The NHC said as the storm moves through the waters, it can regain hurricane strength by Monday as it turns east-northeast.
