Be Alert for Landslides Across the Oregon Cascades

Portland, OR – August 16, 2024 — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flash Flood Watch for parts of the Oregon Cascades, including Lane, Marion, Linn Counties, and the North Oregon Cascades, from Saturday afternoon (8/17) through late Saturday night. Heavy rainfall is expected in the region, raising the risk of landslides and debris flows, particularly in areas with steep terrain and those affected by recent wildfires.

Debris flows, which are fast-moving and extremely destructive landslides, can carry boulders and logs in a slurry of soil and water, moving rapidly down hillsides and through canyons. These flows can travel over a mile and pose serious risks to people, structures, and roads located below steep slopes and at the mouths of canyons.

Safety Tips:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor the flood watch via radio, TV, weather radio, or online. If an evacuation is ordered, act immediately.
  • Be Aware: Listen for unusual sounds like trees cracking or boulders knocking together, which may indicate a landslide. If you suspect danger, leave the area immediately.
  • Watch the Water: Sudden changes in stream or creek water—such as turning muddy or changes in flow—can signal a debris flow upstream. Leave the area immediately if you observe these signs.
  • Travel with Caution: Assume roads may be unsafe. Be especially alert when driving at night, as embankments may fail, sending debris onto roads.
