One man is dead after a crash in east Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One man is dead after a crash in east Wichita Monday evening.

According to the Wichita Police Department, at 6:39 p.m., officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call with a report of shots fired in the 6200 block of E. Harry St.

While officers were responding to the check-shots call, another call came in at 6:40 p.m. saying that a vehicle had collided with a tree in the 700 block of S. Woodlawn St.

WPD said that an off-duty firefighter observed the crash and began rendering aid to the man inside the vehicle. Paramedics performed life-saving measures on the victim until he was pronounced deceased at 7:20 p.m. by Sedgwick County EMS.

The off-duty firefighter did locate a weapon inside the vehicle, and WPD believes the victim is the suspect in reference to the check-shots call in the 6200 block of E. Harry St.

Police do not believe that the victim was shot.

“We do not believe he was shot at this time,” said Andrew Ford, a public information officer with the WPD. “But we won’t know until an official autopsy report comes from the medical examiner’s office.”
