Man sentenced for drunken driving crash that injured children in bedroom

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who authorities say drove impaired when his Dodge Charger crashed into a northwest Bakersfield home — pinning two children underneath — has been sentenced to prison.

Raymond Allen Leonard on Tuesday received a prison term of four years and four months. He pleaded no contest last month to all counts brought against him for the court-indicated sentence.

His plea was not the result of an offer by the District Attorney’s Office.

On the evening of Sept. 22, Leonard, 57 at the time, drove east on Powder River Avenue toward Phairfield Street and failed to negotiate a southbound turn. The car darted across Phairfield and plowed into a home, according to California Highway Patrol.

Two children, 5 and 7, became pinned under the vehicle after it smashed into a bedroom. They suffered serious injuries.
