Two plead no contest in connection with 2021 deadly Union Avenue pileup

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Two brothers have taken plea deals in connection with a 2021 crash on Union Avenue that resulted in a 10-vehicle pileup and one death.

Jose Catarino-Reyes on Tuesday pleaded no contest to charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death, according to court records. Antonio Catarino-Reyes pleaded no contest to a felony accessory charge.

Attempted murder charges filed in assault of pregnant woman

Jose Catarino-Reyes, of Madera, told police he drove the Chevy Silverado that rear-ended a vehicle the evening of Nov. 16, 2021, inflicting fatal injuries to its driver and causing the pileup.

His brother had been following him.

“Immediately after the collision, Jose Catarino-Reyes exited his vehicle, got into Antonio Catarino-Reyes’ vehicle, which was following him at the time of the collision, and fled the scene,” an investigator wrote in a court filing.

They were arrested in Madera.

Prosecutors say Jose Catarino-Reyes faces five years in prison. Antonio Catarino-Reyes is expected to be sentenced to time served, plus 100 hours of community service and two years’ probation.
