Charter school students in Columbus face transportation concerns

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — School is back in session tomorrow but some charter school students who rely on Columbus City Schools for bussing are now looking for a new way to class.

On the district website, it states charter and non-public school students who reside within the boundaries of CCS must request transportation through an online form.

Under Ohio law, a board of education is required to provide transportation for charter and nonpublic school students if they live within the city school district’s boundaries and no more than 30 minutes from the public school they would be assigned to if they attended.

Transportation eligible families said they didn’t begin receiving their student’s transportation details until after Aug. 12. Eldrige Law said his family had to outsource transportation for his granddaughter, who goes to the charter school Harambee Christian School. Those kids are not being bussed.

“My granddaughter, she goes to a charter school, and they don’t have, they lost all their transportation all together,” Law said. “So, it’s been rough getting her back into school, back and forth to school, and it’s costly.”
