Oxford woman killed, Ocala man seriously injured in near head-on crash on rural road

Editor’s note: This story has been revised to correct the time of the crash, which the Florida Highway Patrol initially had misstated.

An Oxford woman was killed and an Ocala man was seriously injured Monday night in a crash in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Ocala man, age 52, was driving a Cadillac CTS west on Sumter County Road 472. A Nissan Altima driven by a 55-year-old Oxford woman was headed east on the same road, according to an FHP news release.

The Cadillac entered the eastbound lane to pass other traffic west of Northeast 42nd Boulevard, the patrol said. The Cadillac collided nearly head-on with the Nissan.

This section of road is just east of U.S. 301. The crash happened just after 7 p.m.

“Post-impact, both vehicles rotated to the south shoulder of CR-472, with (the Cadillac) overturning multiple times,” the release said.

The Nissan driver died at the scene.

A passenger in her car, identified only as an 81-year-old man from Yorkville, Illinois, suffered serious injuries. The Cadillac driver also suffered serious injuries. Both men were taken an area hospital, the patrol said.
