Raid on the rails: Thieves attempt train burglary east of Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Video obtained by 17 News shows an attempted train burglary just east of Bakersfield.

It all happened in the area of Comanche Drive and Edison Highway, at about 8 a.m. Thursday. The video shows boxes of merchandise from the trains left on the tracks, suspected of being taken from the trains by thieves. How they were able to gain access to the boxcars is unknown, but as you look at train tracks around town you get a clue.

In other areas like near Old Town, you can see barbed wire fencing near railroad tracks with a hole in it, leaving trains in the area vulnerable, like the one on Edison.

17 News was not able to confirm details of the burglary with KCSO, including how many suspects attempted to steal from the trains, but KCSO appeared to have detained three people at the scene.

17 News reached out to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and Union Pacific for more details, but BNSF did not respond and Union Pacific did not have a report of an attempted burglary.
