Black army pioneer, Fort Gregg-Adams namesake dies at 96

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A little over a year after Fort Gregg-Adams in Prince George County was renamed after himself and another Black army pioneer , retired Lt. Gen. Arthur J. Gregg has died.

According to the U.S. Army, Gregg died on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the age of 96.

“The entire Fort Gregg-Adams family is deeply saddened by the loss of a great American and our namesake,” said Maj. Gen. Michelle Donahue, the commanding general of the Fort Gregg-Adams and the Combined Arms Support Command in a U.S. Army press release. “Lt. Gen. Gregg will continue to inspire all who knew him and those who serve at Fort Gregg-Adams now and in the future. His dedication and leadership will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

On April 27, 2023, what was once Fort Lee was renamed after both Gregg and Lt. Col. Charity Adams. Both were Black trailblazers in the military world.

“Seventeen years old, frustrated by segregation and inspired by the service of Black Soldiers in World War II, Arthur J. Gregg enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and deployed soon after to support supply operations in occupied Germany,” the U.S. Army said in the release.
