Ypsilanti Community High School pauses controversial dress code – but not ban on hoods

Ypsilanti Community High School has put a dress code policy — which would prohibit students from wearing leggings and tight dresses, among other pieces of clothing — on hold after an online uproar. However, the school is not backing down on a ban on hoods and sunglasses inside the school.

The dress code policy was the subject of online controversy on Facebook after community members shared a graphic they said was sent by the school that outlined a dress code that banned: Pajama pants, lounge pants, leggings worn as pants, hats, caps, sunglasses, slippers as shoes, hoods, headbands, sweatbands, bonnets, bandanas, shirts that reveal the midriff, shirts with spaghetti straps, tight or bodycon-style dresses, and jeans with holes above the knees. Students can wear hoodies, but must keep the hoods down, according to district spokeswoman Megan Wolowiec.

Wolowiec wrote in an email the dress code is a part of the high school’s code of conduct, “which has not changed since 2017.”

“The principal shared the information as a reminder to students and families before the start of the new school year,” she wrote.
