Broward school cafeteria evacuated after several hospitalized for lightheadedness

Broward County firefighters evacuated Cypress Bay High School Friday morning after several people were hospitalized after experiencing lightheadedness, the city of Weston, where the school is located, said.

The city said in a statement released around 10:30 a.m. that the people were in the cafeteria when they became ill. Broward Sheriff’s Office firefighters are checking the school’s carbon monoxide levels, according to the statement.

Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a BSO spokesman, said more than five people were hospitalized.

The city, in an updated statement, said no students were among the patients.

The school dismissed students at noon, according to a statement from Broward County Public Schools.

“Following our initial assessment and ongoing work with local authorities, we have confirmed that the leak has been contained and while there is no immediate risk to the safety of our students and staff, we will be transitioning to an early release dismissal,” Principal Kassandra Fried said in an email to parents.
