(KRON) — West Nile virus activity is intensifying in Contra Costa County, with the latest reports confirming two more groups of mosquitoes and a dead bird testing positive.

The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District (CCMVCD) identified the infected mosquitoes in Martinez and Oakley, while the bird was found in Brentwood.
With previous cases already reported, the District has expanded mosquito inspections, surveillance, and adult mosquito control efforts, especially in areas like the Martinez waterfront.
Residents are urged to use EPA-approved insect repellents and remove any standing water on their properties.
“This is the time of year when we typically see the focus of West Nile virus transmission expand from the warmer areas of East Contra Costa County into parts of the waterfront and Central County,” said Steve Schutz, Ph.D., Scientific Programs Director for the district.
Residents are urged to take preventive measures, including using repellents during peak mosquito activity times in the evening and early morning.
