Proposed Marietta Parking Deck Returns to City Council

MARIETTA — The Marietta City Council will hear plans for a new parking deck near Marietta Square Tuesday.

Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin requested the motion for the city and Downtown Marietta Development Authority to collaborate for the planning, financing and construction of a new deck, with a targeted start date of June 1, 2025.

This initiative, a longtime goal for Tumlin, aims to ease the increasing parking strain in the growing downtown.

“Parking downtown is an ongoing discussion,” said Tumlin, who also serves on the DMDA board. “The Square is in good shape and growing, (with) new construction both on the table and pending.”

The motion proposes a thorough study by a reputable parking firm specializing in urban areas, to ensure the deck’s feasibility and strategic placement.

Tumlin said they are eyeing an existing parking lot on the south side of Mill Street, just west of the railroad tracks next to Starbucks, as a potential site for the deck.

According to Tumlin, three-quarters of the lot is owned by DMDA, the other portion by the city.
