Censured Columbus Schools board member calls others ‘feckless,’ says closing plan ‘dead’

A Columbus City Schools board member held a press conference Monday where he called other members “feckless” and said they lack the political courage to construct new school buildings as the district looks to close others.

Brandon Simmons, who was censured by the CCS board in late May over a leaked document associated with him, said at a Monday press conference at Columbus Alternative High School that his fellow board members “lack the political will” to make decisions that would benefit students and that he believed the the work of the task force to close as many as nine school buildings “is dead.”

Simmons called the press conference late Sunday evening and was not permitted to use CCS property for the event. A district spokesperson told members of the media before the event that it was not associated with the district or the board, and that Simmons was speaking in his own capacity.
