Man and woman killed in weekend murder-suicide identified by Columbus police

Columbus police on Monday confirmed that the death of a woman and man on Sunday was a murder-suicide and have identified the deceased.

Police responded Sunday to a report of gunshots in the 1100 block of Parma Avenue on the city’s Southwest Side. On arrival at the home, officers found two people inside with gunshot wounds, police said.

Beverly Barnes, 59, of Columbus’ East Side, was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene by Columbus Division of Fire medics at 2:07 p.m.

Police said the gunman, 55-year-old James Barnes, had at least one gunshot wound. He was transported by fire medics to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, where he was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.

Homicide detectives said James Barnes shot and killed Beverly Barnes before turning the gun on himself. Sgt. Michael Smith with the Columbus police homicide unit said he could not confirm if the two were married.
