According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks , elk are common in the Cimarron National Grassland in Morton County in southwest Kansas and around Fort Riley in northeast Kansas. Individual elk or smaller herds may be found in other locations around the state.

Hunting elk in Kansas is permitted everywhere except in Morton County. About 900 applications are received for the 20 or so permits allotted each year, and they are divided among military personnel and Kansas residents.
