Police identify man killed by train in downtown Salem

Multiple streets were closed downtown Monday evening after a fatal collision involving a train and a pedestrian, Salem Police said.

The collision was reported at about 4:50 p.m. near the rail line’s intersection with D Street NE. The railroad crew of the northbound Union Pacific line reported the incident to Salem Police.

Witnesses said a man, identified as Alexander Boyd Schumpert, 32, of Salem, was seen standing near the tracks and laid down across them just before the train passed, police said.

Schumpert was pronounced dead at the scene.

East-west traffic was closed between D Street NE and Mill Street SE for about three hours while police investigated and a substitute train crew arrived. The train was released at about 8 p.m.
