CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Crews were dispatched to a Charleston apartment after an automatic fire alarm sounded early Tuesday morning.
Charleston, North Charleston, and Mount Pleasant Fire Departments were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. to the 300 block of Newbrook Drive, a three-story apartment building.
According to authorities, emergency personnel arrived 13 minutes after they were dispatched. The automatic fire alarm was active, and residents reported an odor of smoke.
Crews searched the building and located a possible fire in a third-floor apartment. When firefighters forced the door open they discovered smoke and an extinguished kitchen fire.
While conducting a search of the unit, firefighters discovered a dog in the apartment and brought them to safety.
Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office say the fire originated on the stovetop after combustible items stored on the surface were ignited. A single fire sprinkler contained the fire in the kitchen area.
Officials report five units were affected by water from the incident. Authorities anticipate three adults will be displaced.
