VSP: Injured hiker rescued by helicopter after jumping from cliff into river

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A hiker was rescued by Med Flight after she jumped into the Saint Mary’s River from a cliff and was injured.

At 4:23 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, a Virginia State Police Med Flight crew responded to a call for a 20-year-old woman who had serious back injuries after jumping into the Saint Mary’s River from a cliff along the Saint Mary’s Trail.

For the rescue mission, the Med-Flight 1 crew consisted of a Virginia State Police trooper-pilot and four Chesterfield County Fire and EMS flight paramedics.

Once they arrived, the crew on the ground directed the helicopter into position over the scene and Med-Flight lowered a rescuer from the helicopter to the ground.

Augusta County Fire-Rescue crews at the scene helped to secured the injured hiker to be hoisted to the helicopter about 175 feet above.

The injured hiker was taken into the helicopter, after which the crew then took her to UVA Medical Center to be treated further.
