Conway business reopens after two-week shutdown because of Tropical Storm Debby

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — Now that the flooding in Conway is starting to recede and the rivers have headed into minor flood stage, businesses like Waccamaw Outfitters are getting back into the swing of things.

Owner Matt Varnadore said they had to shut down for two weeks because of the flooding in the parking lot, making it basically impossible to get to the store.

Varnadore has been the owner of the company since it opened 10 years ago. It’s a small business, currently ran by just himself and one other employee.

The shop offers kayak rentals and boat tours and sells bait, boat supplies and apparel. Since the parking lot was flooded up to four feet in some areas, he had no option but to work from home.

“While I was home, the machine didn’t stop. Still making plans, you know, we’re moving, switching gears, summer to fall to winter, you know, we’re still ordering, working on new designs and stuff like that for our apparel, and meeting with vendors and things like that,” Varnadore said. “So, we didn’t stop, it’s just, we weren’t able to sell anything at the moment.”
