Police investigating after 2 Charleston Co. teachers have paychecks stolen

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – North Charleston Police are investigating after two Charleston County School District teachers had their payments stolen in June.

Detectives met with the two victims on Aug. 27 about a fraud report, according to an incident report. Police discovered that an outside source had changed the victims direct deposit information without their knowledge.

This caused their paychecks to be directed to a third-party Sutton Bank account. The victims also told police that they were contacted by Community and Schools, who said they were not receiving invoice payments.

When they contacted the school district, records showed the invoices were paid, but the banking information had been changed to a BMO Harris bank account, the report states.

The school district’s investigation showed the breach came from the Community and Schools domain.

Victims attempted to recall the stolen funds, but the account was negative, and the funds could not be recovered.

$138,969.93 was stolen all together. North Charleston PD’s investigation is ongoing.
