MOBILE, Ala. — Shipbuilder Austal USA and the United States Coast Guard are teaming up to build close to a dozen ships. Thursday morning the company celebrated the official start of construction of eleven Heritage-class off-shore patrol cutters, or OPCs. The new ships will replace aging ships that have been in service for half a century. Austal leadership calls it a major milestone.
