Man arrested for assaulting person in Garland District

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department has arrested a suspect in a violent attack in Spokane’s Garland District earlier this month.

According to the SPD, officers responded to a man unresponsive and struggling to breathe on the ground on W. Garland Avenue near N. Post Street August 15 around 11:30 p.m.

SPD says the victim had been escorted from a local business prior to being attacked. He was transported to the hospital with a serious head injury.

The Violent Crimes Task Force identified a suspect as 48-year-old Johnnie Witherspoon and arrested him Wednesday for first-degree assault.
