Atlantic Beach leaders greenlight $100 million high-rise project

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A controversial $100 million high-rise project got the stamp of approval from Atlantic Beach town leaders Thursday evening.

The town council voted 3-1 to pass the second and final reading allowing developers to proceed with the 18-story hotel.

Developer Charles Morant said the project has been in the works for five years. He said he has gone back to the drawing board several times and made multiple attempts to get the green light for the project.

Now, he said it’s a good feeling to finally reach the finish line.

“I don’t think that this development is going to cause a problem for this community,” Morant said. “It’s going to bring revenue that the community badly needs.”

The hotel, also known as the “Black Pearl” is set to be built between 30th and 31st avenues north. The mixed-use tower would have two levels of public amenities, six levels for parking, 63 hotel units, and at the top, 27 multifamily units.

The amenities would include conference rooms, a spa and a museum honoring the history of the community.
