Garden chores for September in Jacksonville: Plant summer squash, carrots, lettuce

It has been a long hot summer in Florida, and while September is usually the start of the slow cool-down, that does not mean we are completely done with high humidity, 95-degree days, or heavy summer rains and tropical storms. Here are some tips to get your garden and landscape through the month of September and to prepare for the fall and winter.

What can I plant?

One of the most common questions gardeners have are related to what can I plant now? The answers are often limited throughout summer but September is the start of the season where you can get back into your vegetable and herb gardens.

For vegetables, Florida offers an awesome opportunity to get a fall season to plant some of our favorite warm-season vegetables. While it may be a bit too late now for tomatoes and peppers, try growing summer squash and cucumbers. Later on in the month, you can also finally plant your full cool season vegetable garden including cabbage, collards, broccoli, beets, carrots, kale, lettuce and more. September is also the time to start your strawberry plants.
