Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrated Texas Tech’s hard-fought season-opening win on social media Saturday, though it wasn’t an easy one to rejoice over.
The Red Raiders edged FCS squad Abilene Christian in overtime 52-51. The Wildcats tried to go for the win after scoring in OT but failed on the two-point conversion.
“1-0,” Mahomes tweeted in response to his alma mater’s victory.
Some were quick to point out it might not be a victory worth celebrating.
“They barely beat an FCS team this is NOT something to celebrate,” one fan wrote with a crying emoji.
“I don’t even know what I just watched,” another commenter said .
Texas Tech seemed to have things under control until the fourth quarter. Abilene Christian reeled off 17 points in the final 15 minutes, including a field goal with 5 seconds left that tied the game up and forced overtime.
“Stop. We deserve better,” another fan wrote in response to Mahomes’ tweet.
Mahomes had a standout college career at Texas Tech. He became the full-time starting quarterback during his sophomore year and set multiple records with his strong arm and mobility.
