‘Community Paint Day’ takes place at Kern County Fairgrounds

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kids from high schools across Bakersfield teamed up to help beautify the Kern County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

Students from 15 high schools came together to paint pig pens, stalls and anything else in need of a fresh coat of paint on Aug. 31. Over 150 students made it out to the event, in an effort to help prep for the fair in September.

The community service event was put together by Upside Academy, a nonprofit organization meant to help youth build a sense of community.

NaTesha Johnson, Founder of Upside Academy, spoke about what it means for the kids to come together and support Kern.

“They’re painting. Honey, they are painting and it’s tough,” said Johnson. “They came in so excited and then midway through they’re like, ‘this is a lot of work.’”

Johnson takes pride in events that add to our community.

“The Kern County Fairgrounds is a staple in our community, we have history here,” said Johnson. “To have a younger generation come and contribute to that history is very important. That collaboration, partnership and respect, that’s what makes our community what it is.”
