Central Phoenix shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured; suspect at large

A shooting in central Phoenix on Sunday morning left one man dead and another fighting for his life. The shooter appeared to still be at large.

Officers responded about 8 a.m. to numerous calls reporting gunshots near 40th Street and Thomas Road, Sgt. Mayra Reeson, a Phoenix police spokesperson, said. A witness flagged down responding officers and led them to two men who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Reeson said preliminary information suggests the two men were working on a construction project when they argued with a suspect who eventually pulled out a gun and shot them before fleeing.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Reeson said police had no suspect information as of Sunday morning. The area would be restricted for “a prolonged period” while crime scene specialists gathered evidence.

Phoenix police squad cars idled beside yellow crime scene tape on Thomas Road, blocking access to 39th Street, where multiple crime scene vans were parked along with an RV-style vehicle associated with Phoenix police.
