Two homes damaged following fire in Hampton Sunday night

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY)– Five people are displaced after two homes were damaged by a fire in Hampton Sunday night.

According to officials, crews were called to the 300 block of Pennsylvania Ave at 11:50 p.m. for the report of two residential structure fires. Officials say the residents of the neighboring structures safely evacuated prior to the fire departments arrival.

An adult male and three dogs lived in one home and three adults and one child lived in the neighboring home.

One of the residents, Takisha Pope-McCoy said she woke up to her mom screaming, “it’s a fire!” She then came downstairs with a fire extinguisher just to find the whole back deck in flames. Pope-McCoy said she was surprised by how quickly the fire spread.

“Fire moves rapid,” Pope-McCoy said. “It’s very fast and it’s like in the blink of an eye, and I was moving fast, but that fire moves faster.”

Police were able to help both families get a few important documents and other items out of the home and no injuries were reported.
