Birmingham man dies in single-vehicle crash on I-65 in Chilton County

A fatal crash on Interstate 65 in Chilton County claimed the life of a Birmingham man about 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening, law enforcement officials said.

The single-vehicle crash — which happened around the 213-mile marker, two miles north of Clanton — was the result of 57-year-old Vernon Cooper’s 2010 Hyundai Elantra leaving the interstate as he was driving, hitting an embankment, and overturning, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

An ALEA spokesman said Cooper, who was not using a seatbelt at the time, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division is still investigating the crash.
