Alaskan Cruise Port Hit By Major Internet Outage: “Bring Your Cash”

A significant internet outage has struck the popular cruise port of Sitka, Alaska, causing disruptions for thousands of visitors and local residents.

The incident, which occurred due to a damaged or severed underwater fiber optic cable, has left the city without internet or cell phone connectivity.

According to a Facebook post by WinterSong Soap Company, the outage is expected to last for up to two weeks while a repair ship from Seattle makes its way to the affected area.

The company, utilizing a Starlink satellite internet connection, noted that credit card payments may be slow or unavailable due to the disruption.

“Sitka has experienced a loss of all internet and cell phone capability!” the post stated. “A repair ship is coming from Seattle and should arrive to find and repair the break. We have been told it will take up to 2 weeks for repairs. Credit card payments will either be slow or will not work. So bring your cash!”

The outage has significant implications for cruise passengers visiting Sitka. Many rely on internet access for essential activities such as booking excursions, making restaurant reservations, and staying connected with loved ones.
