Most Alaska students are not proficient in reading, math or science, state test results show

What you need to know:

  • The latest statewide assessment data from Alaska shows that the majority of students are not proficient in core subjects like English language arts, mathematics, and science.  The 2023-2024 results are similar to the 2022-2023 results, even after Alaska lowered its assessment standards in January.
  • Around 32% of students were proficient or advanced in English language arts and mathematics, while nearly 37% were proficient or better in science.
  • State officials say the standards remain in the top third nationally. The AK STAR assessment evaluates students from grades 3 to 10 in English language arts, mathematics, and science, categorizing their performance into four levels: advanced, proficient, approaching proficient and needs support.
