Man arrested in murder of UW-Whitewater gymnast

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The Whitewater Police Department has identified the man arrested in connection with to a homicide Friday night.

Chad Richards, 23, of Loves Park, Ill., was arrested Saturday.

Richards is facing first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed charges. He is currently being detained in the Walworth County Jail.

He was listed on the UW-Whitewater wrestling team for the 2021-22 season.

Richards is scheduled to appear at the Walworth County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon.

Kara Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Ill., was shot and killed late Friday night inside an apartment on W. Whitewater St.

Welsh was a national champion and two-time All-American for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team.
