BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The city of Bakersfield said the water department will reduce water flows in the Kern River east of Stockdale Highway River Bridge for maintenance and repairs.

The reduction in the water flows begin Tuesday, the city said in a release.

This step will help the City of Bakersfield Water Department address operational needs, maintain safe river operation, and prepare for upcoming infrastructure projects, according to a release.

The flow reduction in the area near the park at River Walk at the Bellevue weir, enabling maintenance to begin. Repairs at Bellevue weir, scheduled for October 2024, will include sediment removal and repair. Sediment buildup can reduce the river flow and reduce the aquifer’s recharge rates.

In addition to the maintenance near Bellevue Weir, the Water Department is also seeking bids for reconstructing Kern River Canal Back-up weir located east of the Coffee Road bridge. The weir was damaged by high water flows in 2019 and 2023, officials said.
