LULAC urges DOJ, FBI to probe alleged voter suppression in Texas amid rising concerns

A Hispanic civil rights group is sounding the alarm over what it calls voter suppression and intimidation tactics being employed by high-ranking government officials in Texas.

During a news conference Tuesday, Sept. 3, in front of the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse, members of the League of United Latin American Citizens called on the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate recent moves by Texas Attorney Ken Paxton to intimidate and harass Hispanic voters.

“It is sad that we have to come together and address this,” said LULAC National Vice President for the Southwest Ray Mancera. “I thought we have done away with all that discrimination and challenges to our voting rights, but here we are again.”

“We are appalled at what the attorney general, Ken Paxton, is doing.”

The most recent instance of Paxton’s attack on Hispanic Texans’ voting rights, Mancera said, occurred near San Antonio, when an 87-year-old abuelita was pulled from her home and her computer confiscated in an early morning raid and accused of improperly registering people to vote.
